To begin with, Polonius instructs Reynaldo to go to France to spy on Laertes. However, Polonius teaches Reynaldo of how to cleverly ask people in France about Laertes. This is shown when Polonius said, “And in part him. But, ‘you may say,’ not well;/ But, if’t be he I mean, he’s very wild,/ Addicted so and so’ - And there put on him/ What forgeries you please – marry, none so rank/ As may dishonor him.” (I,i,18-22). It shows that Polonius is using Reynaldo to ask around if his son is being good. However, Polonius is not directly asking his son if he is misbehaving which is interesting. It shows that Polonius is a character who is curious and noisy of Laertes affairs. A theme that is evident is the nature of relationships. We see this because Polonius has trust issues with his family members. Even though Polonius thinks he is clever and smart and always one step ahead, I believe he is only fooling himself because I don’t think he needs to be clever and devious to see if his son is up to no good. Nonetheless, I think Polonius is only doing this for his own selfish reasons because he does not want his honour and family name to be ruined if Laertes commits a bad deed. Another theme that is evident is appearance vs reality. This theme is apparent because Polonius is using the power of language to help change the truth. Polonius states, “By indirections find directions out” (I,i,72). This means that Reynaldo must lie in order to find the truth. Also, Polonius is teaching Reynaldo how to ask questions about Laertes and see if he is up to no good. Therefore, Polonius conversation with Reynaldo shows many themes that will reoccur throughout the play.
In addition, Polonius’ conversation with Reynaldo tells us a lot about Polonius’ character. I believe Polonius is an overprotective father who thinks he is smart by sending someone to spy his son. This shows that Polonius is someone who likes to control others and wants to know what they are up to. I personally think Polonius is crazy! He does not trust his son which is surprising. I think Polonius actions might hurt his relationship with his son. Hence, I believe his behaviour where he continues to spy might lead to his downfall!
In conclusion, we see Polonius is a character who is deranged. I think he really needs help, maybe a psychologist??? Jokes aside, Polonius is an interesting character and important in illustrating many themes throughout the play. I hope you enjoy reading my blog. Feel free to comment on Polonius’ behaviour in Act 2 and ask any questions. Thank you!
